Travel Exercise Tips

If you have a job that requires you to travel often you may need some vacation exercise tips since maintaining a regular workout schedule can seem impossible. Combine that with being jet-lagged, a poor selection of eating options at restaurants, and long meetings, finding the time or motivation to work out under these conditions can be overwhelming. Skipping working out on a regular basis can have dramatic effects on your fitness plans.

Exercise

First off you have to pack as if you had a steady workout plan. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Pack workout essentials like sneakers, exercise clothing, jump rope, and weightlifting gloves. With that stuff packed, in the worst-case scenario, you can at least get a decent workout in your hotel room.

Some hotels are equipped with fitness equipment; they are usually not very sophisticated, mostly consisting of lightweight dumbbells and a treadmill. Workout DVDs have become very popular because you can bring them anywhere, they require very little if any equipment and they work! Or you can just access some workouts online via YouTube (or better yet, have me design a program for you!)

Additionally, there are things you can do on a daily basis while you are out of town, such as walking the stairs to your hotel room, asking the hotel personnel where nearby walking trails you can utilize, or using the hotel swimming pool. Park further away from your hotel or job and take a brisk walk to your destination. Walk through the airport and carry as much luggage as you can comfortably. Take the stairs instead of the escalator.

If possible, do more sightseeing on foot instead of driving. Other exercises like jumping rope, doing jumping jacks, or using your own body weight doing things like push-ups, crunches, or leg squats are good workouts for keeping muscle tone as well. In some cities, there are YMCAs that offer guest memberships temporarily in case your hotel doesn’t have a workout area.

Other Options

Other things to keep in mind other than fitness exercises are the time of day you complete your workouts should remain the same. If you work out in the morning, then do the same while you’re out of town. It’s difficult enough for your body to adjust to jet lag or different time zones; it’s important for you to get a routine going in order to keep the body from beginning to store fat.

Exercising while out of town can prove to be beneficial to your time away as well. The effects of working out can help you sleep better and keep you more alert and energized while on the road.

Consider these travel exercise tips next time you’re heading out of town and stay on track with your fitness goals. Besides, there is nothing worse than returning from a vacation or business trip and going to the gym in worse shape than when you left it.
