Special Needs Adults

About online Training

In 2013, I began working with special needs adults. I have trained a variety of young adults over the last decade with autism and Down Syndrome, and it’s been a rewarding experience.

Working with the special needs adult population is a little different from training other clients; however, there are also similarities. Each individual is unique, and personal training is tailored to meet each client’s individual needs.

Let’s look at the benefits of personal training for these two populations:

Personal Training for Special Needs Adults: Autism

Autism Young adults with autism vary in personality and abilities, but most benefit from personal training. They become stronger and improve cardiovascular capabilities, while also experiencing:

  • Sensory Integration: Gain body awareness, coordination, and control through guided exercises.
  • Stress Reduction: Strength training calms anxiety and promotes relaxation.
  • Body Control: Improve movement coordination and prevent injury with tailored workouts.
  • Attention Span: One-on-one sessions enhance focus and skill transferability.
  • Limiting Repetitive Behavior: Structured routines encourage mental flexibility and break patterns.

Young adults with Down syndrome face unique challenges, but a tailored personal training program offers numerous benefits:

Muscle Tone Improvement: Strength training enhances muscle tone, providing better support for joints and improving coordination.
Weight Management: Personalized training aids in weight loss, promoting overall health and reducing risks of heart disease and diabetes.
Heart Strengthening: Cardiovascular training boosts heart and lung strength, enhancing stamina and overall well-being.

I like the weights. I like to make them go up and down, and in and out with my arms and legs. They make me get stronger. Dennis rocks, and he is teaching me cool stuff about exercise.

Client Testimonials

Dennis is the best personal trainer ever...truly! After a few workouts, I was doing things I didn't even know I was capable of! I will never train with anyone else. If you're looking for someone to take your money and go easy on you, Dennis is NOT your guy. However, if you want a serious trainer that will work you to your fullest potential and help you meet your goals, give Dennis a call. Not only have I lost weight as a result of his workouts, but, my flat tummy is back! Woohoo! Thank you Core Fitness!!!

At the age of 23, I was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). Which meant that any form of physical exercise would prompt dizziness and the occasional fainting. Whenever I stood up too fast or got out of bed, I'd get lightheaded and dizzy. As a very active, young individual, not being able to hike, play sports with friends, or make simple positional changes made life very frustrating. Most importantly, for my dream career I needed to get SCUBA certified, but was unable to do so with my condition.

My doctor recommended that I seek out someone to help me with consistent and graduated physical activity to strengthen my cardiovascular system. That's how I came across Dennis Blair and he does a great job creating a plan to help me progress with my physical activity. He is exceedingly thorough and thoughtful when it comes to my specialized training plans. We went from simple exercises on the ground to standing and jumping! I've been working with Dennis for roughly 1 year now and, WOW, what a difference it has made. Dizzy spells and lightheadedness are now infrequent and I've been able to get back into rock climbing, riding my bike, moderate hiking, and get out of bed in the morning. Plus, I am so close to being cleared for SCUBA diving! I could never have gotten to this point without Dennis.

I am so grateful for Dennis and his dedication to helping me get back to the active lifestyle I once had lived and working towards my dream job.

Thank you, Dennis!!

At the ripe old age of 64, I knew I needed to do something to ward off the effects of being undisciplined with my diet and physical activity most of my life. With a strong recommendation from a friend who had had incredible results working with Dennis for a couple years, I knew it was an opportunity I could not turn down:) Now after two years with Dennis as my personal trainer coaching me through 2 workouts per week, I can testify I have not only lost weight, but, more importantly, I am stronger in all areas of my body! The strengthening has allowed me to do things I could not do before (i.e. walking all over New York City). Dennis was sensitive to where I was when I started with him, and, he designed a program personalized to what I needed and wanted. He is encouraging, professional and gets results because he expects results!
